The Holocaust and the Blame

  1. What you just did is called quote mining: taking something out of context, such that it means something entirely different than it did in context.

    The above quote in context.

quote mining is one step removed from lying, and reveals that the miner has no argument.

  2. I don't know PersonalFailure. I read the quote in its context and it still seems like Harris is blaming the Jews for the persecution they have faced in the past.

This is not directed to PersonalFailure as I have had respectful, but brief, exchanges with him/her in the past, but atheists (not all, but some of the ones I've talked to) quote mine as much as theists by refusing to even acknowledge the context of the different books of the Bible. Either context does or doesn't matter. This goes for both theists and atheists alike; context can't be used as a double standard.

  3. Hmm... I didn't notice the context change anything, really.

Then Sam's horrible understanding of Isaiah 7:14 on pg 95. Real Hebrew expert that he is. The amazing sign that God is giving is that a young woman will conceive? Boy, context really does us out... thanks, PersonalFailure!

  4. PersonalFailure,
You are quite right: Sam Harris goes on to explain why he is self-justified to blame the historical persecution of the Jews including the Holocaust on the Jews themselves.

I would say that he should be ashamed of himself but shame is integrity's daughter.

  5. Yeah, in that respect Harris is almost as bad as John Hagee who once said that Hitler was used by god to drive the jews towards their holy land...totally effed up.

    - In Hagee's 2006 "Jerusalem Countdown", Hagee says anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust, were and are the fault of Jews - a divine curse for worshiping idols.

So, Mariano...going to have a picture of Hagee with a hitler-stache, or is that just reserved for atheists who say that kind of stuff?

Then of course, there's the centuries of xian anti-semitism...for example, Martin Luther's On the Jews and Their Lies...
