I think he's arguing against religion in practice and not just your particular interpretation of the bible.
ReplyDeleteWhen he's talking about ceremony, smoking altars, priestly incantations, etc. he's referring to the practices that are done every day by the most popular religions in the world.
He can't possibly refer to every possible interpretation of every religious text, so he's using cases we are all familiar with: Catholicism, Islam, etc.

I would only mention that his context was very clearly the Old Testament.
